This discussion highlights how states, regions and localities can use existing federal funding — as well as innovative and well-used tools — to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Global warming caused by GHG emissions impacts all communities, but its impacts are disproportionately felt by low-income and BIPOC communities. Lowering GHG emissions can reduce the impacts of global warming.

In Connecticut, planners have created a Carbon Reduction Strategy and are participating in the Climate Pollution Reduction Program. Presenters highlight construction carbon calculations, GHG emission inventories, and public engagement strategies. Both the Carbon Reduction Strategy and the Climate Pollution Reduction Program are ongoing federal programs; planners in the audience may use these ideas in their future planning work and specifically in planning to reduce GHG emissions.
