Cycling in the United States pales in comparison to other countries. Especially in areas built after World War II, land use and transportation infrastructure do not support bicycling. Changing this dynamic can be frustratingly slow, making it difficult to justify spending on bicycling. As with many systems, the benefits of incremental change are small, and it is only when the system or network is complete that dramatic change occurs.
Denver's Community Transportation Network program seeks to demonstrate the value of bicycling infrastructure by implementing quick-build, low-stress bikeways in an entire neighborhood. The Colorado Convention Center is within one of those neighborhoods.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate low-stress bikeways from more traditional bikeways like bike lanes.
Understand quick-build bikeway design options.
Consider replicating Denver's community transportation network approach to increase bike mode share within a neighborhood.
