Universal Design in Housing and Transportation

Universal design in housing is a design technique which creates a home space for equal access by individuals of all ages and abilities. Such features can be incorporated into private homes and residential facilities to facilitate aging in place and those with disabilities and mobility issues. Similarly, Complete Streets is an approach to transportation planning and policy that considers the needs of all roadway users.

This session will look into AARP's approach to Universal Design in Housing and Transportation through its policy research and model ordinances. The two model ordinances that will be discussed in the panel will be "HomeFit™ Model Ordinance – Local and State Legislative Guide to Universal Design in Housing" and "Complete Streets: Model Legislation for States and Municipalities".

The panelists will delve into the research, policy, and the legislative landscape in relation to AARP's work on universal design in housing and transportation. Additionally, the panel discussions aims to share the best practices to create livable communities and various resources that can help planners incorporate universal design aspects in their work.
