City of Denver
Mayor Mike Johnston was sworn in as Denver’s 46th Mayor on July 17, 2023. Committed to making Denver a vibrant, affordable, and safe city, he works to address challenges facing residents, businesses, and communities.
Before entering politics, Mayor Johnston was a Teach for America educator in the Mississippi Delta and later served as principal at three Denver-area schools. One school made history as Colorado’s first public school with 100% of seniors graduating and admitted to four-year colleges. These experiences fueled his dedication to addressing educational inequities.
From 2009 to 2017, he represented Northeast Denver in the Colorado Senate. He championed the READ Act, ensuring students read at grade level by third grade, leading to the Early Literacy Grant Program, which allocated $16 million for education initiatives. He also secured bipartisan support for the ASSET bill, Colorado’s version of the DREAM Act, and advanced gun safety and renewable energy policies.
A dedicated public servant and visionary leader, Mayor Johnston believes Denver’s challenges are solvable. He is fluent in Spanish and actively engages in initiatives promoting the city’s growth. A Colorado native, he lives in East Denver with his wife, Courtney, a Chief Deputy District Attorney, and their three children.
