Vaere Social
Harrison, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
Liesl Codrington is the Director of Vaere Social and one of Australia’s leading practitioners in social sustainability and stakeholder engagement for the built environment. With over 20 years of experience, she works at the intersection of research, policy, and practice to ensure communities are planned with people—not just infrastructure—at their core.
As a neurodivergent professional, Liesl brings both expertise and lived experience to her work, advocating for inclusive urban planning that goes beyond accessibility to consider how diverse cognitive and sensory needs shape interactions with public spaces. Her research explores how the built environment can enable or hinder participation, and she collaborates with governments, developers, and planners to embed social impact considerations into urban design.
Liesl is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices in planning processes, ensuring that social sustainability isn’t an afterthought but a fundamental principle. She regularly gives presentations on the social impacts of urban development, including neurodiversity in the built environment. Her work challenges traditional approaches to planning, calling for evidence-based, people-first design that creates cities where everyone—not just the majority—can thrive.
