FEMA’s Future of Flood Risk Data (FFRD) initiative is expanding flood-mapping capabilities to equip all areas of the country with risk information. It covers a comprehensive range of flood hazard types and frequencies, with four objectives:
Shift from binary to probabilistic analysis. Move beyond the “in or out” view of flood maps;
Modernize data management and delivery;
Empower private and public stakeholders so partners can contribute to data development, access models, and build their own applications; and
Drive risk-informed actions.
This data can be used to support the development of mitigation plans, implementation of building codes, and comprehensive planning.
This presentation updates one in 2022, when attendees’ feedback contributed to the development of a new pilot program for displaying and sharing data. This feedback, and more than two years of conversations with traditional and non-traditional stakeholders, helped FEMA better understand what data and information currently exists and how it is being used. This presentation captures the agency’s progress, findings, and insights and identifies how planners can contribute to and take advantage of FFRD outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the benefits of and progress made in FEMA’s new mapping methodology.
Articulate the potential uses for new, graduated flood-risk data in your community.
Understand how feedback provided at APA’s 2022 National Planning Conference and other public sessions have been used to improve proposed FFRD products.
